Students and staff from Family Futures Downeast celebrated 2024 graduates this past weekend at the The University of Maine Machias. Seven FFD students received a Certificate in Family Studies
The 15-credit Certificate in Family Studies is “designed to give students introductory level core curriculum credits with a focus on parenting and strengthening families. This curriculum helps students assume the role of change agents for their children, families, and communities as well as prepares them for additional coursework that transfers into future degree programs,” according to the The University of Maine Machias website.
Two FFD students received their Bachelor’s degrees – one in Business and the other in Psychology and Community Studies, with a minor in Substance Use and MHRT.
Staff from Family Futures Downeast shared: “Yesterday was a whirlwind of excitement as we celebrated the incredible accomplishments of our FFD graduates! From late-night study sessions to overcoming challenges, each of you has shown immense dedication and resilience. Your hard work has paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of what you’ve achieved. Here’s to the memories made and the bright futures ahead! Keep reaching for the stars, and remember, the best is yet to come.”
FFD is a two-generation college program designed for parents and their children. It’s unique because parents enroll in college, taking classes with a peer cohort and receiving guidance from a dedicated coach.
The purpose of FFD is to assist parents and families in achieving their goals, such as gaining financial stability, securing good employment, earning a college degree, and supporting their children’s success.
Washington County parents at or below 200% of the federal poverty line who have at least one child under the age of 18 can apply.
There is no cost to participate. FFD will assist with financial aid applications for classes and cover any remaining costs. Educational opportunities are provided to the children registered with FFD at no cost to the family. To date, 182 families have participated in FFD.
